Bart Houwers is a Dutch visual artist working at the intersection of rural landscapes, industrial- and production sites, and urban environments. His practice examines the profound changes in the countryside over recent decades, focusing on themes of (spatial) memory, micro-histories, place, industries, scale, tradition, and loss.
Through site-specific installations, Houwers investigates how the mechanization and standardization of farming and industrial processes resonate within the living conditions of our environment. Using pre-existing materials and fragmented language, his work draws parallels between bodies and the land—both as sites of labour, transformation, and erosion. By manipulating and displacing quotes and materials, he creates fragmented narratives that question the toll of industrial progress on human and non-human life alike. The resulting juxtapositions, often disjointed, highlight the erasure of individuality and history in favour of the dominance of standardized production.
Houwers studied Fine Arts at the Rietveld Academie (2017-2021) and was resident at De Ateliers (2022-2024)
